Oracle-9000

A coin-op fortune machine from a 1980s arcade, with a turbaned robot oracle inside. Drop a coin, ask about love, work or your code, hold your hand on the crystal ball and take the card the machine prints for you.

How the machine works

The Oracle-9000 is an arcade fortune machine: for laughs, not for life decisions.

  1. Take a coin from the bottomless purse and drag it to the coin slot, or just tap the purse.
  2. Press one of the arcade buttons: love, work, money, travel or code.
  3. Press and hold the crystal ball until the gold ring fills. Let go too early and the Oracle tells you to concentrate.
  4. Your card prints out of the machine. Tap it to see it up close, save it as an image, or drop the next coin.
  5. Cards are common, rare or legendary. Every seventh coin is a Lucky Seven, and its card is rare or better.
  6. Feed the machine too fast and it overheats: steam, a cooling countdown, and the next card comes out a little broken. Bang on the glass too much and it tilts.
  7. The collection book shows how many cards you have found. There is one secret card: old-school gamers will know the code; everyone else can try tapping the jewel on the turban a few times.

The Oracle’s voice is synthesised speech, and the sound effects and music are generated in your browser as they play. Your collection is kept on this device only; nothing is sent anywhere.
